Gerry Kelly, whom South Beach Magazine refers to as “The Renowned Impresario of the Night,” will add his vaunted brand of boutique dining and celebrity-packed entertainment to the ever-burgeoning list of attractions on offer at Gulfstream Park over the coming weeks.
The foremost nightclub operator in South Florida, Mr. Kelly will take over Gulfstream Park’s second-floor venue, formerly known as “The Sport of Kings Lounge,” and reinvent it as “MI-VI,” a name that carries with it a nod to the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), colloquially known as MI6 in “James Bond” movies.
Sparks exist whenever the worlds of celebrity and top-class racing collide, and Mr. Kelly will be prominent in restoring that electricity to Gulfstream Park.
“While plans are still in the works, one of the things I’m looking forward to doing at Gulfstream is a concert series with major acts,” said Mr. Kelly.
Superstars of stage, screen and sport will be prominent, but Mr. Kelly is adamant in taking care of his regular guests. “Celebrities come and go but the regulars are our steady clientele,” he said.
Wasting no time in remodeling the venue, Mr. Kelly and his team will begin work immediately. “This will be where the House of Windsor meets Studio 54,” said the 47-year-old Irishman.
Team Kelly is targeting the MI-VI opening for the weekend beginning Nov. 27, or the day after Thanksgiving.
In joining Mr. Kelly in making Wednesday’s announcement, Gulfstream Park President and General Manager Bill Murphy said “Gerry’s integrity, his wealth of experience and his enthusiasm are a perfect fit for Gulfstream Park. Anticipation of his finished product promises to keep guests, present and future, riveted over the next few weeks.”
News of Mr. Kelly’s involvement with Gulfstream Park comes less than 80 days before America’s premier wintertime racetrack opens its live meeting Jan. 3. Racing will be conducted on a Wednesday-Sunday basis through April 23.
Mr. Kelly has had a long and successful career in nightclub entertainment.
He became marketing director at the hotspot Pacha in 1989, then renewed his friendship with Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall, who had just opened the trendy South Beach club Bash. His experience at Bash propelled Mr. Kelly on to a career that saw him open a succession of popular South Beach clubs, such as Shadow Lounge, Liquid and Level.
