Career:

  • Signaled his return to the upper echelon of jockeys by winning 31 races in three months at Gulfstream in 2007, his first season riding full-time in South Florida .
  • He went on to become the regular rider on Gulfstream Park Handicap winner Corinthian, scoring in the Met Mile and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile ... He battled with Cornelio Velasquez throughout August for the Saratoga riding title ... Was only 34 when he was elected to racing’s Hall of Fame in 2004 .
  • Won three Eclipse Awards, his first as an apprentice in 1987 and his next two (1989 and ‘92) as a journeyman ... He joins Chris McCarron and Steve Cauthen as the only jockeys to win Eclipse Awards in both categories .
  • He’s won Kentucky Derbys with Real Quiet in 1998 and Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000. Real Quiet also won the Preakness and came within a nose of a Triple Crown sweep, losing the Belmont to Victory Gallop .
  • He became the youngest rider to win 3,000 races in 1995 and at age 27 was the youngest rider to go past the $100 million mark in career earnings, hitting that mark riding Formal Gold to victory in the Iselin Handicap at Monmouth .

  • Other: Rode in Japan for 10 weeks, from April through June of 1991 . The native Louisianan won his apprentice Eclipse for his work riding in Maryland. He had been riding for four months at Evangeline Downs. While his wife was pregnant, he fell during a race and was kicked in the head, fracturing his skull in several places. His wife went into premature labor, and the two shared a hospital room during recovery and the birth of their first son. His father owned a small racetrack in Louisiana.
