Career:
- Hall of Famer is the most successful trainer in the history of the Breeders’ Cup, having won 13 Triple Crown races, trained a record 22 Eclipse champions saddled more than 550 graded stakes winners and won the Eclipse Award as top conditioner four times.
- He was the first trainer to earn more than $100 million.
- Has won the Kentucky Derby four times (Winning Colors, 1988; Thunder Gulch, 1995; Grindstone, 1996 and Charismatic, 1999) and won six straight Triple Crown races from the 1994 Preakness through the 1996 Derby.
- He won seven of the nine Triple Crown races held from 1994-1996.
- He has won the Florida Derby twice (Thunder Gulch, 1995 and Cape Town, 1998) and the Fountain of Youth three times (Dance Floor, 1992, Thunder Gulch and High Yield, 2000).
- Since 1987, Lukas has won 29 stakes at Gulfstream plus three Breeders’ Cup races at Gulfstream, including Cat Thief’s victory in the 1999 Classic.
Other:
- Grew up outside a small farming community in Wisconsin and earned a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, where he was also an assistant basketball coach.
- Settled in California in 1972, where he began training Quarter Horses (training four AQHA champions) then switched to Thoroughbreds in 1978.
- Has seen several of his assistants go on to top careers on their own including Todd Pletcher, Mark Hennig, Kiaran McLaughlin, Bobby Barnett, Randy Bradshaw, Mike & Rebecca Maker and Dallas Stewart.
- Son Jeff was his assistant in California until a 1993 accident involving Tabasco Cat left him in a coma for several weeks.
