Career:

  • One of the leading turf trainers in the U.S. with a reputation built on the feats of veteran campaigner Better Talk Now.
  • The winner of the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf made a record-tying fifth appearance in that race in 2008. While that stable stalwart forged ahead last year, Motion continued his emergence on the Derby scene with the likes of Adriano, who won an allowance and finished ninth in the Fountain of Youth before winning the Lane’s End Stakes at Turfway Park. That horse went on to finish 19th in the Kentucky Derby while Icabad Crane went on to finish third in the Preakness Stakes 
  • Motion’s first Grade 1 star, Film Maker, scored a pair of runner-up finishes behind Ouija Board, in 2004 and 2006 Filly & Mare Turf. She was third in that race in 2005
  • Other stakes winners Motion has trained include Funfair, Broken Vow, Humaita, Confessional, Chilito, T. D. Vance, Kona Blend, Bursting Forth, Equality, Trajectory and Sweet Talker

  • Worked under Jonathan Sheppard 1985-1990 and Bernard Bond in 1991: assumed that one’s stable after Bond’s retirement later that year … Wife Anita worked in France as assistant to Alain Royer Dupre … His mother Jo rode as an amateur jockey in England and worked as an assistant trainer in England and America. She also took care of the 1951 Grand National winner Nickel Coin. She owns a successful tack shop in Middleburg, Va.
