Career |
-
Keyed a roller coaster year by launching Big Brown’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes season out of his Palm Meadows training center.
-
His Gulfstream campaign started on a high note with Benny the Bull winning the Sunshine Millions Sprint and carried through the winter with Big Brown winning an allowance race and the Florida Derby.
-
March 29 saw Dutrow win $4 million in races with three horses with Benny the Bull and Diamond Stripes winning stakes on the Dubai World Cup card and Big Brown taking Gulfstream’s signature event.
-
Other major stakes winners in 2008 include Kip Deville, Frost Giant and Mr. Umphrey.
-
Dutrow trained the 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam and hails from a family of conditioners: his late father, Dick Sr., was a leader on the East Coast and his brother Tony is based in Maryland and Delaware.
-
Rick earned his third career Breeders’ Cup win with Kip Deville in the Mile at Monmouth Park in 2007.
-
He has been the leading trainer at both Aqueduct and Belmont Park, and was the top trainer in New York in 2001 and 2002 in terms of wins. Prior to 2008, his best year as a trainer came in 2005, starting the year with Saint Liam’s win in the Donn Handicap and continuing with Grade 1 winner Sis City, that year’s Kentucky Oaks favorite and Davona Dale Stakes winner.
-
Later that season Silver Train would win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Met Mile the following spring.
Other: Big Brown’s Triple Crown attempt exposed many skeletons in Dutrow’s closet including several run-ins with the law and racing officials because of personal drug problems ... Started working for his late father at age 16 and despite an estranged relationship, considers Dutrow Sr. his mentor ... Close friends with Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who will be overseeing the training of 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Stardom Bound in California while Dutrow is nominally the conditioner |
