Career:

• Veteran New York-based trainer and former dominant conditioner in South Florida, won every Calder and Tropical-at-Calder title from 1976-1980.
• Two biggest stars in the last three years have been turf horses Request for Parole and Trippi’s Storm. Hough took over training of Request for Parole in 2004 and guided him past the million-dollar mark and to a Grade 1 victory in the United Nations at Monmouth Park that year. Trippi’s Storm wired the field in the 2007 Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park after starting his campaign with two wins that winter at Gulfstream.
• Made an international splash in 1982 with Half Iced, who won the Japan Cup over Hall of Famers John Henry and All Along. Other stakes winners include Sensation,  Brunilda, Concorde’s Edge, Pretty Wild, Cacht Wells, Terrific Challenge and Travelator.
• Trained and partially-owned top 1981 sophomore Proud Appeal, who had four stakes wins, including the Gotham and Blue Grass stakes, before an unplaced Kentucky Derby finish; Caller I.D. won three stakes as a juvenile in 1991: the Arlington-Washington Futurity, Saratoga Special and the Sanford Stakes. Hough would capture the Saratoga Special five years later with Caller I.D.’s son All Chatter.
• Top juvenile stakes winners include Distinct Habit, Distinct Reality, Feline Story, Diamond on the Run, and You and I, who went on to win the Met Mile and Brooklyn Handicap in 1995.
  

Other: Got his introduction to horses through his father, Joseph, who owned and trained thoroughbreds in Illinois. Worked briefly at legendary Harbor View Farms before becoming contract trainer for Bert and Diana Firestone. Maintains a farm in Florida. First winner, No Shavings, scored at 30-1 at Ascot Park in Ohio in 1971. Went into semi-retirement for seven months in 2001 when his wife Cinda was diagnosed with cancer.
