Career:
-
Best known for handling the near-perfect campaign of 2006 champion 3-year-old Bernardini, who won the Preakness Stakes, Travers Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup after breaking his maiden at Gulfstream Park.
-
The former assistant to Bill Mott went to work for Sheik Mohammed’s team in 1995, living and working in Dubai for Godolphin from 1995-’03. He made frequent trips back to the States during that time with Maktoum horses such as Worldly Manner in 1999.
-
He returned permanently to operate Godolphin’s New York stable in 2004 and, even though the Godolphin horses raced under the name of trainer Saeed bin Suroor, he was in charge of the daily training of major stakes winners such as Fantastic Light, Daylami, Sulamani, E Dubai and Lailani.
-
Prior to Bernardini he trained the filly Balletto to win the Frizette and finish second in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was the first horse bred in the United Arab Emirates to win a Grade 1 in the U.S.
-
Won the 2008 Canadian Turf Handicap at Gulfstream with the Chilean-bred Host as well as two other Graded stakes in New York last year.
Other: Albertrani’s wife, Fonda, was the regular exercise rider of Cigar until she and Tom moved to Dubai. ... His brother Louis trained Artax, who won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Gulfstream in 1999 and went on to an Eclipse Award as Sprint champion ... Tom Albertrani was also a jockey from 1976-’77, winning enough to races to lose his apprentice allowance.
