Now in its sixth year, the Sunshine Millions race series, the richest day of state-bred competition in thoroughbred history, will pit top California and Florida-bred horses in eight stakes races worth a total of $3.6 million at Gulfstream Park and its sister West Coast racetrack Santa Anita.
Both racetracks are owned by Magna Entertainment Corp., and the Sunshine Millions race series was conceived by Frank Stronach – an Eclipse Award-winning horseman and the founder and Chairman of MEC – as part of a wider effort to showcase the breeding operations of Florida and California and to establish an exciting new sporting event and wagering opportunity to anchor the beginning of the nation's racing calendar.
The Sunshine Millions card that will be hosted by Gulfstream Park the afternoon of Saturday, January 26 is as follows: the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Oaks, $500,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff, $300,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint and $500,000 OBS Sunshine Millions Turf. Sunshine Millions day festivities Jan. 26 will include a handicapping contest, giveaways of Super Bowl tickets, and the grand opening of Frank's Beach just south of the clubhouse.
