Career:
- Add his name to the list of leading young jockeys and the latest riding talent to emerge from Panama. He was ninth in the 2007 Gulfstream standings for his third top-10 finish in his four years here. He rocketed into national prominence as the regular rider on Miesque’s Approval, who won the Breeders’ Cup Mile and the Sunshine Millions Turf in 2006.
- Castro’s Mile made him the youngest rider to win a Breeders’ Cup race, although he only held the title for two hours, when Fernando Jara lowered the record. In 2007 he teamed with another Live Oak Plantation runner My Typhoon for a Grade 1 victory in the Diana at Saratoga and went out-of-town during last year’s meet to win the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn aboard Ermine.
- He spent his first summer in New Jersey last year and finished second to perennial kingpin Joe Bravo at Monmouth Park and won the riding title at the Meadowlands.
- He won his first Grade 1 aboard Pampered Princess in the 2005 Spinster Handicap at Keeneland. He had a nine-win day June 4, 2005 at Calder, setting a national record.
Other: Made his U.S. debut on April 16, 2003, aboard Storm Prospect at Gulfstream and went on to earn that year’s Eclipse Award winner as top apprentice rider despite missing nearly four months. Only began riding in races in December 2002 and rode 36 winners in Panama before coming to the United States. He grew up on a produce farm and graduated from the Panamanian jockey school where he followed in the footsteps of idol Cornelio Velasquez.
