Career:

  • Raced last winter at Aqueduct, where he won both the inner-track and spring titles, but frequently appeared at Gulfstream and won $71,700 in just 18 rides.
  • Won his first Gulfstream Park riders’ title during the 2003 meet as he paced the colony with 91 wins.
  • He won two Grade 1 races in 2006, riding Go Deputy to the Sword Dancer Invitational and Swap Fliparoo in the Darley Test, both at Saratoga.
  • Parlayed third-place overall finishes at 2001 and 2002 Gulfstream meets into leading jockey honors both years at Monmouth Park.
  • Had been dominant jockey on South Florida circuit, where he was based until 2001, with eight riding titles. Exploded onto Florida racing scene in 1993 but was derailed later that year by suspension after a discrepancy was discovered in his reporting of the number of winners he had in his native Venezuela. He returned in spring of 1995 by promptly capturing riding titles at Tropical-at-Calder and Hialeah.

    Other: Won five judo championships before leaving sport to attend Venezuela's jockey school. He was initially introduced to racing by a family friend at age 18. He had to compete against nearly 200 riders when he broke in at Venezuela’s lone racetrack.
