Career:
- Among the new generation of young riders who appear poised to dominate major circuits after vaulting onto the scene in 2004, he finished third in the Gulfstream standings last winter and tied for spring meet title at Keeneland with apprentice Julien Leparoux.
- He has won riding titles at Aqueduct, Chur-chill Downs, Hoosier Park, Kentucky Downs, Ellis Park and Turfway Park ...
- Was on his way to matching a superb 2005 in which he ranked in the Top 5 in earnings and won his first Breeders’ Cup race aboard Intercontinental in the Filly & Mare Turf. Among his 2006 highlights were five stakes wins at Gulfstream, including the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Breeders’ Cup Turf aboard Einstein, and a six-win day at Santa Anita in only his second-ever trip to California capped by a win in the Grade 2 Arcadia Handicap aboard Japanese star Silent Name.
- He has also emerged as a prominent option for two-time Eclipse Award winning trainer Todd Pletcher when his main jockey, John Velazquez, wasn’t available, scoring stakes wins with Pletcher-trained stars Oonagh Maccool, Sunriver and Circular Quay.
- He was a finalist for the 2004 Eclipse Award as top apprentice. He led the nation with 455 wins but lost the vote to Brian Hernandez Jr.
Other: Attended the races in his native Peru, “fell in love” and enrolled in the nation’s riding school. Began riding late in 1999 and won the apprentice title at Hippodromo de Monterrico. He emigrated to the U.S. in 2002, starting out at River Downs with the help of Dante Zanelli Sr.
