Retired from the publishing business to Palm Beach, Fla., in 1983
Was the CEO of Technical Publishing, which specialized in leading trade magazines and textbooks
Got into racing after retirement through Dogwood Stables, but quickly grew his involvement, largely breeding and racing his own horses
His two biggest stars have been Street Sense and Banshee Breeze. The former won the 2007 Ken-tucky Derby and Travers after a championship 2-year-old season capped by a record-setting win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Banshee Breeze was a multiple Grade 1 winner and two-time runner up in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Owned 1999 Florida Derby winner Vicar as well as Coolawin, Til Forbid, Metfield and Binalong
Convinced Hall of Fame trainer Carl Nafzger to continue to handle his horses rather than fully retire in 2006 and a year later won the Kentucky Derby with Street Sense
