Principal business: Chairman and CEO of Shields and Co., an investment banking firm that is a member of the New York Stock Exchange
Organizations: Shields is a vice chairman of the board of trustees of the New York Racing Association, and serves on the boards of trustees of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. Member of The Jockey Club and founding member of the National Thoroughbred Association.
First horses: When Shields played polo at Meadowbrook on Long Island, N.Y., one of the competing players was H. Allen Jerkens. When Shields' polo days were over, he decided to breed and own racehorses and primarily uses Jerkens to train them (although other trainers include Robert F. Conners, and Frank Alexander). He began breeding to race in 1982. Longtime friend Leverett Miller of T-Square Stud in Florida has been and is his adviser on racing, breeding, and the commercial market
Best horses: Homebreds Wagon Limit (Jockey Club Gold Cup) and Limit Out (Jerome Handicap) combined to win four graded races for Shields in 1998 ... Other stakes winners bred and/or owned by Shields include Silver Survivor, Aucilla, Glaive, Clarify, Lucky Delight, and (in partnership with Miller) Curia, Highway Queen, and Jet Charlie.
