Went from being a hairdresser to a betting shop clerk all the way to heading the chain of Prince Arthur bookmakers before selling out in 1996 for $50 million

More recently has invested in health clubs and Internet gambling ventures, making him 118th on the Times of London's 2007 Rich List

Won the Kentucky Derby, Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes with Thunder Gulch in 1995 and the Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Oaks in 2007 with the filly Rags to Riches. He was also a partner on 2007 Florida Derby winner Scat Daddy

Among his international champions are Entrepreneur, Montjeu, Giant's Causeway, Johannesburg, Mozart and High Chaparral

He and his Coolmore partners owned and raced The Green Monkey after paying a world record $16 million for the colt at auction in 2006 

Coolmore and their Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien dominated racing in Europe in 2008, with O'Brien winning 21 Group 1 races.
