Career:

  • Two-time winner of Gulfstream’s Fountain of Youth Stakes with his most recent victory coming in 2006 with First Samurai following the disqualification of first-place finisher Corinthian.
  • Fillies Bel Air Beauty and Tessa Blue were his stakes stars in 2007. Bel Air Beauty won graded stakes at Keeneland’s fall meet the last two years: the Alcibiades Stakes (G1) in 2006 and the Valley View (G3) in 2007. Tessa Blue won the Indiana Oaks (G3) and the Inside Information Stakes on the Breeders’ Cup undercard at Monmouth last fall.
  • Brothers is no stranger to Triple Crown runners, having saddled 1991 Preakness and Belmont Stakes and 3-year-old Eclipse Award winner Hansel, who started that season at Gulfstream, running third behind Fly So Free and subsequent Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold in the Florida Derby. Brothers also trained Pulpit, a top-class 3-year-old of 1997 who gave Brothers his first Fountain of Youth Stakes win before finishing second to Captain Bodgit in the Florida Derby.
  • Madcap Escapade was a dominant female sprinter and captured graded stakes at Gulfstream in both the 2004 & 2005 seasons. She retired a millionaire.
  • Since taking out his trainer’s license in 1972, Brothers has won training titles at Keeneland, Louisiana Downs, Churchill Downs and the Fair Grounds where he is a member of the local Hall of Fame. He was named trainer of the year in 1991 by the United Thoroughbred Trainers of America.

Other: Married to jockey-turned-racing analyst Donna Barton ... Began riding and showing horses in sixth grade before attending the University of Southern Mississippi  ... First job in racing was as assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg.
