Career
-
Top-20 trainer in 2007 at Gulfstream with one of his two graded-stakes victories coming through the wire-to-wire upset by Giant Wrecker in the Canadian Turf Handicap. In that race he defeated reigning Eclipse Award turf champion Miesque’s Approval and eventual Gulfstream Park Turf Stakes and Arlington Million winner Jambalaya. Also won the City of Hollywood Stakes on the Fountain of Youth undercard last March with La Dolce Vita.
-
Previous South Florida stars included 2005 Gulfstream Park Handicap winner Eddington, a horse-for-the-course who prepared here for the Triple Crown the previous year. He went on to win the 2005 Pimlico Special. Tap Day, Tap Dance and Gygistar are others who have shined at Gulfstream in the past three winters. He has trained more than 100 stakes winners since going on his own in 1992 and passed the 1,000 win mark late in 2007. Prior, he worked as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainers Jack Van Berg and Wayne Lukas as well as Neil Howard.
-
In his first full year on his own, Hennig runners earned over $4 million in 1993, good for ninth on the earning’s list. Included were Grade 1 wins by Personal Hope (Santa Anita Derby) and Star of Cozzene (Arlington Million and Man o’ War).
-
Has trained other Grade 1 winners Vergennes, Prenup, Summer Colony and Raging Fever.
Other: Attended the Ohio State University for two years before opting to follow his father, John, into a career as a trainer ... Sister Letty is married to Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic-winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. Both were assistants to Lukas in the 1980s ...
