Career

  • The trainer of 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam hails from a family of conditioners: his late father, Dick Sr., was a leader on the East Coast and his brother Tony is based in Maryland and Delaware. Rick earned his third career Breeders’ Cup Championship with Kip Deville in the NetJets Mile at Monmouth Park in 2007.

  • Also trains Oprah Winney, an eighth-place finisher and one of the favorites for the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint who was featured on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" prior to her Breeders’ Cup start.

  • Has been the leading trainer at both Aqueduct and Belmont Park, and was the top trainer in New York in 2001 and 2002 in terms of wins.

  • Enjoyed his best year as a trainer in 2005, starting the year with Saint Liam’s win in the Donn Handicap and continuing with Grade 1 winner Sis City, that year’s Kentucky Oaks favorite and Davona Dale Stakes winner. Later that season Silver Train would win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Met Mile the following spring.

Other: Cites his father, who died in 2000, as role model and teacher ... Started working for his father at age 16 and assisted in development of Lite the Fuse, a multiple Grade 1-winning sprinter ... Gives much of the credit to primary client Sanford Goldfarb, who has put together high-profile ownership partnership that includes Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre.
