 Career:

  • Former assistant to Stan Hough, Margolis won his first race in 2000 with Her Great Affair at Turfway Park.

  • Picked up several horses when Hough’s primary owners, Robert & Bea Roberts, dispersed their stock that year. Among that group was Request for Parole, a multiple stakes winner of both dirt and turf.

  • For Margolis, Request for Parole won Turfway Park’s 2002 John Battaglia Memorial and finished second in the Lane’s End Stakes before finishing fifth in the Kentucky Derby.

  • First graded-stakes win came with Baileys Edge in the Mr. Prospector Handicap at Gulfstream Park in 2003.

  • He won the same race the following year with Cajun Beat, who provided Margolis with the biggest win of his career less than three months earlier in the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

  • Had three stakes winners in 2007: A Little Gem, Marina Ballerina and Neverbeendancin’. A Little Gem won the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth last September.

  • Splits his time between Churchill Downs, Gulfstream and Monmouth Park.

Other:

  • Went from high school right to the track, grooming horses at Belmont Park for trainer John Veitch before later assisting Pat Byrne and Howie Tesher.
  • Went to work for Hough in the 1990s and moved to Kentucky to be his assistant there in 1997.
