  • Spent 2005 in the limelight as the trainer of Horse of the Year finalist Afleet
  • AlexRitchey became known for unconventional training of the colt, resulting in dramatic wins in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes following a third in the Kentucky Derby
  • Afleet Alex stamped himself as a top 3-year-old capturing the Arkansas Derby in his final start before the Classics
  • Colt gave Ritchey the first grade one win of his career in the 2004 Hopeful Stakes before finishing a close second (to Wilko) in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
  • Trainer made his first appearance in the Triple Crown with Marciano, who finished seventh in the Preakness following a win in the Federico Tesio Stakes
  • Top juvenile of 2005 was Southern Success, who won the Dover Stakes
  • Racing Luck, Separato and Joey Carson were also stakes winners last year
  • Spends most of the year based at Delaware Park where he is among the all-time leading trainers
  • Set the then-record for single season Delaware wins with 87 in 2001 and has finished among the track's top four trainers of the past 14 seasons, including topping the list five times (1992,1993,1994,1996 and 2001

    Attended Potomac Horse Center at age 18 to improve skills on horseback
    Spent a year-and-a-half training with the United States Olympic Equestrian Team in preparation for the Munich Games in 1972
    Was an accomplished steeplechase rider before turning to training thoroughbreds in the early 1980s.
