Family has been involved in racing for many generations, including father Dennis - a Washington trainer ... Paternal grandfather was a blacksmith and maternal grandfather, the late Jim Dailey, was a long-time outrider at New York tracks ... Ward began riding as a teenager and earned the Eclipse Award as top apprentice of 1984. That year saw him win 335 races, over $5 million in purses and the jockey titles at Belmont, Aqueduct and the Meadowlands ... Later rode in Southern California where he was aboard Ferdinand when the Kentucky Derby winner broke his maiden in 1985 ... Retired from riding in 1989 because of weight problems and assisted his father before going out on his own as a trainer in 1993.
