J. Paul Reddam and Rockin BB Ranch’s 5-year-old mare Peach Flambe, with jockey Eddie Castro aboard, stalked the pace early in Saturday’s $75,000 Cicada Stakes at Gulfstream Park, took command easily in the far turn and drew clear to score by 2¼ lengths as the even-money favorite in the 1 1/8 miles test for Florida-bred fillies and mares.
Peach Flambe had finished second in the Sunshine Millions Distaff and fifth in the Rampart Handicap (G2) in two previous starts at the meet against much tougher company, but was clearly best in the Cicada.
Lucille Geranis’ Cat Can Do rallied for second, 2½ lengths before Reata Thoroughbred Racing’s Lady Byar, who was third in the field of eight.
Trained by Mark Hennig, Peach Flambe is a daughter of Flying Chevron and she paid $4 while timed in 1:49:67 over the fast track.
Winning Jockey Quotes
Eddie Castro:
“She got a nice position and I never had to worry. The other filly (Silversider) had a little bit of speed and me and my filly just said ‘OK, go ahead.’ I took back a little and sat in a great position. We got to the three-eighths pole and she wanted to run, and I let her go. She felt really nice. She made a nice run and won easy.”
