Career: After starting his career in South Florida back in 1982, Solis returned from California last winter to Gulfstream and finished the winter as one of the top 10 riders in wins and money won. Solis was victorious in Gulfstream’s Sugar Swirl (G3) and Harmony Lodge and Saratoga’s Honorable Miss (G2) with Tar Heel Mom. He also won the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and Suburban (G2) aboard Flat Out. Other stakes winners included Hungry Island, Compliance Officer and Emerald Beach. He won the Suwannee River (G3) with Cherokee Queen. He has won three Breeders’ Cup races as well as six consecutive riding titles at Santa Anita, Hollywood and Del Mar beginning with the ’96 Hollywood summer meet. Received the George Woolf Memorial Award in 1997 and was recognized at the Sports Legend Awards for his contribution to the sport in 2006. He finished second in the Kentucky Derby three out of four years with Captain Bodgit (1997), Victory Gallop (1998) and Aptitude (2000). Solis rode Pleasantly Perfect to victory in the 2004 Dubai World Cup. Solis got interested in racing at a young age and enrolled in the Panama jockey school at the age of 14. He won his first race in Panama on Nov. 7, 1981. He hobbies include golf and hiking and maintains his fitness with strenuous mountain hikes. He can be seen jogging on the dirt several mornings a week.
