Career: Castanon first made his mark at Gulfstream in 2012 in the Davona Dale (G2), in which he rode Yara, a 64-1 longshot, to a neck victory over heavily favored Grace Hall. Another major score for Castanon in 2012 came aboard Shackleford in the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2) on the Kentucky Derby Day card. In 2010, he tasted success in the Triple Crown for the first time, guiding Shackleford to a half-length upset of Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Earlier that year, Castanon and Shackleford just got caught at the wire by Dialed In in the Florida Derby (G1), almost pulling off a 68-1 shocker. They went on to finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), Haskell (G1) and Indiana Derby (G2).

Dale Romans, trainer of Shackleford, was quoted in the Washington Times saying of Castanon, “He’s like a critically-acclaimed movie that’s never made it as a big hit for some reason.”
He won his 2,000th race in 2010 at Keeneland. Won riding titles in 2005 and 2006 at Tampa Bay Downs and 2005 at Ellis Park.
Other: Father was a trainer in Mexico. His brothers, Tony and Jose, were also jockeys. His first winner was April of 1989 at Agua Caliente.
