Stuart Janney III

Janney is the Chairman of Bessemer Trust Co. and a prominent leader with The Jockey Club, T.O.B.A., Breeders’ Cup, Keeneland, and the NTRA. 
 
  • Co-owned and co-bred 2013 Florida Derby (G1), Fountain of Youth (G2) and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb.
  • He resides in Butler, Md. 
  • His parents bred and raced champion filly Ruffian and his grandmother, Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps, raced as Wheatley Stable, which campaigned Horse of the Year and leading sire Bold Ruler. 
  • Janney is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and University of Maryland Law School. 
  • After receiving his law degree in 1973, he worked four years as a speechwriter and policy assistant in the offices of Maryland Senator Charles Mathias, Tennessee Senator Howard Baker, and the U. S. State Department.  He was general counsel for Johns Hopkins before moving to Bessemer Trust in 1994. 
  • During the 2011-12 Gulfstream Park meeting, his homebred Hymn Book captured the Donn Handicap (G1). He also was represented in the winner’s circle with Orchid Stakes (G3) winner Hit It Rich. 
  • He bred and campaigned Coronado’s Quest, the winner of 1998 Haskell (G1) and Travers (G1) and $2 million in purses. 
  • Other stakes winners include Miliary Look, Warning Glance, Deputation, Mesabi Maiden, Criminologist and Hunting.
