Career: Kaplan has built a reputation for success with buying and developing modest-priced Florida-bred horses. He enjoyed a career highlight with Musical Romance, who captured the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) on her way to being honored with an Eclipse Award as the country’s leading distaff sprinter. The 5-year-old Florida-bred mare won the Inside Information (G2) at Gulfstream Park in 2012.. 
Kaplan has had a number of good horses over the years, including Storm in May who won the $250,000 Sunshine Millions Dash at Gulfstream in 2007 and returned $55; Mr. Livingston, who won the 2000 Palm Beach (G3);  Imawildandcrazyguy, who finished fourth in the 2007 Kentucky Derby (G1); and Seacliff, who swept the open division of the Florida Stallion Stakes in 1995. Other stakes winners include Goldarama, Castlebrook, Ell’s Once Again and Ravensmoor. 
Other: The popular Kaplan has made his specialty winning races with inexpensive and moderately-priced 2-year-olds -in-training, purchased mainly in Ocala. 
Kaplan was a Second Lieutenant in the Army, serving in Vietnam and eventually receiving a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. 
After taking flying lessons, he started Air South, a charter service  that ran from South Florida to Disney World. 
He took out his trainer’s license in 1981.
