Career: Romans was honored at the Eclipse Awards ceremony at Gulfstream Park last January as North America’s top trainer of 2012. 
 
In 2013, he saddled Little Mike for a victory in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) and Silver Max for an upset win over 2012 Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1). He captured the Churchill Downs September meeting title.
 
He ranked third in wins and earnings during the Gulfstream 2011-12 meeting, during which he saddled Little Mike for a win in the Florida Sunshine Millions Turf and Tapitsfly for a triumph in the Honey Fox (G2). Little Mike, who won three graded stakes during the 2011 Gulfstream meeting, went on this year to capture the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1), the Arlington Million (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). Tapitsfly, the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, went on to capture the Just a Game (G1) and the First Lady (G1). 
 
Romans trained Dullahan, who finished second in the 2012 Palm Beach (G3) before winning the Blue Grass (G1), finishing third in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and winning the Pacific Classic (G1); and Silver Max, who won twice before running off five straight stakes scores on turf.   
Shackleford, who gave his trainer his first Triple Crown success by winning the 2011 Preakness Stakes (G1), won the 2012 Metropolitan Mile (G1). 
 
He notched his second Breeders’ Cup success in 2011 with Court Vision, who won the Mile at 64-1. 
 
Romans trained Kitten’s Joy during a 2004 Eclipse Award- winning season which saw him become male turf champion by winning the Palm Beach (G3), Secretariat (G1) and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1).
 
In 2010, Romans saddled Paddy O’Prado for a victory in the Palm Beach before a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He also saddled First Dude for a runner-up finish in the Preakness and a third-place finish in the Belmont that year. 
 
He has saddled to horses for second-place in the Florida Derby: Shackleford (2011) and Sharp Humor (2006). 
 
Romans has had two Swale victors: Sharp Humor and Eaton’s Gift (2008).
 
Romans trained Roses In May, who finished second in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and 2005 Donn Handicap (G1) before winning the 2005 Dubai World Cup. 
 
In addition to Little Mike’s victory last season, Romans has enjoyed Sunshine Millions success with American County in the 2008 Oaks, and Joint Effort in the 2006 Oaks and 2007 Distaff.
 
Other: He learned his trade from his father Jerry, a veteran trainer who died in 2000.
 
He took out his first trainer’s license at age 18. 
 
He spent the winter of 1986 working as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens at Hialeah. 
 
His first winner came with Miss Mindy on Feb. 15, 1987 at Turfway Park.
