Career: Had a giant year in 2011, winning the Preakness (G1) with Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Shackleford and winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) with Court Vision, who returned $131.60. During the winter at Gulfstream, saddled Little Mike to wins in the Emirates Airlines Appleton (G3) and Canadian Turf (G3). He started 2010 by winning Palm Beach with Paddy O’Prado, who would finish third in Kentucky Derby and become multiple graded stakes winner on turf...Saddled First Dude to second-place finish in Preakness and third-place finish in Belmont...A breakout season at Gulfstream Park in 2004 helped launch Romans on to the national stage. Since then he has developed leading 3-year-olds on both the dirt and turf in South Florida including last year with Eaton’s Gift in the Swale Stakes and Halo Najib going from a third-place finish in the Hutcheson Stakes to a win in the OBS Championship in Ocala. In 2007, Duveen took the Palm Beach Stakes three years after Romans-trained Kitten’s Joy launched a championship campaign in that race, eventually winning the Eclipse Award as best male turf horse. Eaton’s Gift was also the second win in the Swale for Romans, taking that race in 2006 with Sharp Humor prior to a close runner-up finish behind Barbaro in the Florida Derby ...  He added a win in the 2008 Sunshine Millions Oaks with American County to wins in the 2007 Sunshine Millions Distaff at Santa Anita and the 2006 Sunshine Millions Dash at Gulfstream with Joint Effort. He capped off 2004 when Kitten’s Joy (Turf) and Roses in May (Classic) each ran second in Breeders’ Cup races … Roses in May came back in 2005 to finish second in the Donn Handicap and win the Dubai World Cup Other: Learned his trade from his father Jerry, a veteran trainer who died in 2000 … Took out his first trainer’s license at age 18 … Spent the winter of 1986 working as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens at Hialeah … First winner came with Miss Mindy on Feb. 15, 1987 at Turfway Park.
