Career: She saddled her 1,000th winner in July 2011 and tied atop the Belmont trainer standings with Todd Pletcher for wins during the 2011 spring/summer meet. A crowning achievement came her way in 2009 when she became the first woman trainer to win the title at the prestigious Saratoga meeting. 
Her biggest star was City Zip, who swept Saratoga’s three major stakes for 2-year-olds in 2000 and placed in the Hutcheson and Fountain of Youth the following spring before a ninth-place finish in the 2001 Florida Derby. 
Renowned for her work with young horses, her first Grade 1 victory came with the 2-year-old filly Things Change in the 1998 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. 
She was the first woman to saddle a Grade 1 winner at Keeneland when Tenski took the 1998 Queen Elizabeth II Cup.
She has won three stakes at Gulfstream in her career with Lucifer’s Stone in the 2004 Herecomesthebride Stakes her lone graded score. 
Among her stakes stars and track record holders are Canadian Ballet, Dicey D J, Double Booked, Mother Russia, Ready Jet Go, Shoot to Kill, Premiere Express, Zee Lady, Rosie O’Greta, Lady Lear, Silver Rail, Torgan, The Silver Move and Rapid Selection.
Other: Her father Clyde was a trainer and friend of D. Wayne Lukas (both are from Wisconsin). He helped pick out several of Lukas’ early stakes winners. Clyde is now retired from running a training center in Ocala, Fla. 
Rice started out as an exercise rider for her father and later as an assistant trainer.
She attended Penn State for two years.
She started training on her own in 1987 in New Jersey at age 23 and later moved to New York in 1991.
