He branched out on his own in 2004 after serving as assistant to Hall of Famer Bill Mott for 14 years.
He registered his first graded-stakes winner in 2005 when Cool Conductor won the $200,000 Dixie Handicap (G2) on the Preakness undercard. He trained stakes-winning turf sprinters Onthedeanslist and Dynamist.
Other: Nicks is a second-generation horseman, the son of Midwestern trainer Morris Nicks. His tenure with Mott included working with two-time Horse of the Year Cigar and Breeders' Cup champions Fraise, Ajina and Escena. "I like think I got my bachelor's degree in horse training under my dad and my master's under Bill Mott," he said.
