HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Patriot Stables’ Aquinnah stalked the pace before kicking in through the stretch to capture Sunday’s $60,000 Sunset Handicap at Gulfstream Park.
The 7-year-old mare captured her second race in three starts since being claimed for $20,000 by trainer Jane Cibelli for the Patriot Stable, prevailing over seven rivals in the five-furlong turf feature.
“The owner wanted an older horse that he wanted to have some fun with. He has some young horses, and he’s had some disappointments. He said, ‘I just want an old hard-knocking horse,’” Cibelli said. “I kind of knew her from Monmouth Park. They run a lot of five-eighths turf here, so she might be all right.”
Aquinnah ($10.40) was more than all right while receiving a dream trip under Jonathan Gonzales, holding off the Cibelli-trained Satan’s Mistress by three-quarters of a length. Tizgale finished third, another neck back.
The winner, a daughter of City Place, captured her 12 career race in 36 starts, boosting her career bankroll to $286,530.
Wednesday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot at $846,305.48
The Rainbow 6 Carryover will be $846,305.48 heading into Wednesday’s program at Gulfstream. The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the 19th consecutive racing day when multiple ticketholders each cashed for $6950.44 Sunday.
The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. The wager was last solved on Wednesday, March 18, when a lucky bettor collected a jackpot payoff of $210,973.74.
