Nicks Doubles Up for Saturday’s Bougainvillea Handicap

Jul 17, 2015

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Two recent arrivals to trainer Ralph Nicks’ stable are among 10 fillies and mares entered for Saturday’s $60,000 Bougainvillea Handicap at Gulfstream Park.

The five-furlong turf feature for fillies and mares will mark the return of Whisper Hill Farms’ Zamquick following a stint in Kentucky, while Keith Davis’ Angie’s Prim Lady is scheduled to make her first start for Nicks.

amquick finished third in the Ladies Turf Sprint at Gulfstream on Feb. 21 and finished off the board in the Captiva Island a month later before joining trainer Eddie Kenneally in Kentucky, where she raced steadily but without success in three allowance starts.

“She was third in a stake here over the winter. She’s a nice filly,” Nicks said. “I would think she’ll run really well.”

Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm and Nicks have teamed for four wins from six starters during the spring and summer at Gulfstream Park.

Angie’s Prim Lady has breezed twice for Nicks since arriving from Louisiana, where she captured an optional claiming allowance as the 1-9 favorite over the Louisiana Downs turf course at the five-furlong distance last time out.

“She’s training fine,” Nicks said. “She’s one of those fillies who’s run out of conditions and they’re trying to find somewhere to run her.”

Angie’s Prim Lady has won four of seven starts in five-furlong turf races.

Jose Caraballo has the mount aboard Angie’s Prim Lady, while Tyler Gaffalione is slated to ride Zamquick.

Priscilla Vaccarezza’s Little Michelle, who finished off the board in the Princess Rooney (G2) over the main track on July 5, is set for a return to the turf course over which she has won three times, including a victory in the Gracie Handicap on May 16. Trainer Carlo Vaccarezza named Harry Hernandez to ride the daughter of Tiz Wonderful.

St. George Stable’s Fascinante, the 3-1 morning-line favorite who was beaten by a nose in the Gracie Handicap, enters the Bougainvillea off a second-place finish behind graded-stakes winner R Free Roll in the Tiger Lily Handicap last time out. Jesus Rios has the mount aboard the Efren Loza Jr.-trained mare, who is scheduled to concede between two and five pounds to her nine rivals as the 121-pound highweight.

Joanne’s Wildcat, fourth and third, respectively, in the Tiger Lily and Gracie handicaps; Celebrity Star, a recent stakes winner over the main track; and Silver Sashay, an impressive allowance winner last time out; are also slated to take to the Gulfstream turf Saturday.

I Will Be Free, Red Minx and Creative License round out the field.
