HALLANDALE BEACH, FL
– Fountain of Youth (G2) winner Gunnevera returned to the worktab at Gulfstream Park West Saturday for the first time since his late-closing third in the $1 million Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park April 1.
Peacock Racing Stables’ multiple graded-stakes winner breezed five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 under Edgard Zayas in preparation for a scheduled start in the Kentucky Derby (G1) May 6.
“It went very well. He galloped out very, very good,” trainer Antonio Sano said. “He was very relaxed, very quiet, very good.”
Gunnevera is scheduled to work once more at Gulfstream Park West before shipping to Churchill Downs next Saturday.
“I know the next race is not going to be an easy race, but my horse is working very good,” Sano said.
Javier Castellano was aboard the son of Dialed In for his 5 ¾-length victory in the Fountain of Youth March 4, as well as his victories last year in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (G3) and Saratoga Special (G2). However, Gunnevera’s jockey for the Triple Crown has yet to be formalized.
“I need to wait for the race today at Oaklawn for Castellano,” said Sano, referring to Saturday’s Arkansas Derby (G1), in which Castellano is slated to ride the undefeated Todd Pletcher-trained Malagacy.
