HALLANDALE BEACH, FL
– Jockey Jesus Rios rode the 2000th winner of his career Sunday, guiding Miss Americain into the winner’s circle following a victory in the eighth race at Gulfstream Park.
Rios, who rode more than 1,500 winners in his native Puerto Rico before venturing to South Florida in 2011.
“I feel very happy. I want to thank all the owners and trainers,” said Rios, whose fellow jockeys celebrated the milestone in a winner’s circle ceremony.
Sent to post at 7-2, the Kathleen O’Connell-trained Miss Americain rated off the pace before launching a bid on the turn into the stretch and drawing away to victory.
In Puerto Rico, Rios rode the winners of 26 Grade 1 winners, including D’Wildcat Speed, whom he guided to 14 straight victories in 2002-2003. The multiple Grade 1 winner would venture to South Florida to win two stakes, including the 2005 Rampart (G2) at Gulfstream, as well as produce Lady Aurelia, who captured the King’s Stand (G1) at Royal Ascot this year for trainer Wesley Ward.
“D’Wildcat Speed was the best,” he said. “She was a great horse.”
Rios has scored graded-stakes victories in this year’s Skip Away (G3) aboard Fear the Cowboy and 2015 Azalea (G3) aboard Dogwood Trail at Gulfstream..
