Thewayiam Wins Second Consecutive Graded Stakes in Herecomesthebride

Mar 3, 2018
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Thewayiam, owned by Great Point Stables, Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables, got a ground-saving trip under jockey Jose Ortiz entering the stretch to win the $100,000 Herescomesthebride (G3) by 1 ¾ lengths over Amertume. Brattata was third.

Described earlier in the week as the “Energizer Bunny” by trainer Graham Motion, Thewayiam has now won four of five races since coming to the U.S. from Europe. The 3-year-old daughter of Thewayyouare came into the Herecomesthebride off a victory Feb. 3 at Gulfstream in the Sweetest Chant (G3). She covered the 1 1/16-mile course in 1:41.41.

My Favorite Gift, fourth in the Sweetest Chant, went to the front in the Herecomesthebride and set fractions of :23.77, :48.33 and 1:12.34 while Ortiz rated Thewayiam toward sixth along the inside. Arounf the final turn, Ortiz moved Thewayiam along the inside and then drove to the lead in the stretch.

Co-owner Michael Dubb (Thewayiam): “The track has been speed-favoring, so not seeing fractions of 22 and 46 [seconds] in the back of your mind you’re always concerned about the speed getting away. She seems to be getting better and better. She seems to be push-button. I was concerned about the weight we were giving to some horses, including Todd [Pletcher, trainer of Amertume] who ran second. I think he has a very nice horse. Jose really knows this horse. She’s not afraid of the rail, she’s not afraid to split horses. He knows he can save ground and make his one move. The one bad trip she had we were out in Del Mar from the 13 hole and tried to use her early, and there was no gas left in the tank.”

“She loves the course. I don’t know if this is a horse for the course or a horse that’s just getting better. I think it’s a case of both. I really do. She did win for us at Churchill Downs on a different type of turf course with some give in it and everything else, so we’ll see what happens from here.”

Jockey Jose Ortiz (Thewayiam): “I went to the fence and saved all the ground. I stayed there and when it was time to go, she responded really really well.
