Racing background: Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2012, the 42-year-old Velazquez has more than 5,100 career wins including the Florida Derby with eventual Kentucky Derby winner Orb in 2013 as well as Quality Road in 2009. Injured in a fall at the 2013 Breeders’ Cup that later required emergency removal of his spleen, he returned to riding at Gulfstream in late January. In 2012, he led all Gulfstream riders in money won ($4.4 million) and was third with 73 winners. He captured the Kentucky Derby in 2011 with Animal Kingdom, won the Belmont Stakes with filly Rags to Riches in 2007 and Union Rags in 2012, and has 11 Breeders’ Cup victories to his credit. He was Gulfstream’s top rider in 2004 and 2006, and won the Eclipse Award in 2004 and 2005.

Professional/racing background: A newcomer to the industry, Delfino, 54, imports and distributes wine in his native Venezuela, and with his brother also owns and operates La Montanara, an Italian restaurant in Aventura. He and his wife, Canadian-born Josie Martino, also rescue animals. Wildcat Red is the second horse they have owned, purchased for $30,000 as a 2-year-old in training last March in Ocala. Owners since 2012, they have one other horse with trainer Jose Garoffalo, 4-year-old filly Capriccio Blue, who was claimed at Gulfstream on Feb. 20.

Racing background: Introduced to horses by his father, Jose Sr., who operated a Thoroughbred breeding farm in their native country. Attended both law school and the trainer’s academy in Venezuela while helping with the family business. Chose the racetrack over a courtroom as his career following graduation in 1988. The 50-year-old Garoffalo first came to the U.S. in 1988 as an assistant to Angel Medina, returning full-time in 1999. Won first graded stakes of his career with Yara in the 2012 Davona Dale (G2) at Gulfstream. Wildcat Red captured both the Hutcheson (G3) and Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth (G2) three weeks apart this winter.
