Besilu Stables Florida Derby Champion Orb Wins Kentucky Derby
Orb became the 22nd Florida Derby winner to win the Kentucky Derby when he rallied down the stretch Saturday at Churchill Downs to win the 139th Run for the Roses.
Trained by longtime Gulfstream veteran Shug McGaughey and ridden by Gulfstream's second-leading jockey Joel Rosario, Orb started his 3-year-old campaign with a victory under allowance conditions Jan. 26 at Gulfstream before winning the Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth Feb. 23 and the Besilu Stables Florida Derby March 30. The Kentucky Derby was Orb's fifth consecutive victory.
In the first 62 runnings of the Florida Derby, 42 starters have gone on to win 57 Triple Crown events.
Three of the first four Derby finishers raced and/or trained at Gulfstream or its satellite training facility Palm Meadows. Revolutionary, who finished third for trainer Todd Pletcher, was stabled this winter at Palm Meadows as was fourth-place finisher Normandy Invasion, trained by Chad Brown.
