Champion Shanghai Bobby Works for 2013 Debut in Holy Bull
Undefeated Shanghai Bobby, expected to be heavily favored in next Saturday’s $400,000 Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park, turned in his final serious preparation Sunday morning for the 1 1/16-mile stakes for Florida Derby (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) hopefuls.
Honored as 2012’s champion juvenile at the Eclipse Awards ceremony at Gulfstream Park Saturday night, the 3-year-old son of Harlan’s Holiday breezed five furlongs in 1:00.88 under exercise rider Patti Krontenko at Palm Meadows Training Center.
“It went great. It looks like everything’s on schedule,” said Pletcher, whose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner fell just one vote short of being voted a unanimous choice for his Eclipse Award.
Shanghai Bobby worked in company with Verrazano, a 3-year-old colt who captured his career debut at Gulfstream on Jan. 1 by a dominating 7 ¾ lengths.
“They went head and head and finished evenly,” Pletcher said. “It was a nice work for both of them.”
Kauai Katie, who captured the $100,000 Old Hat (G3) at Gulfstream on New Year’s Day by eight lengths, breezed a half-mile in :49.63 Sunday morning.
The 3-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon, who has won four of five starts, is scheduled to run in Saturday’s $200,000 Forward Gal (G2) at Gulfstream.
“She just went a nice half,” Pletcher said. “Everything’s on schedule.”
