HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Gulfstream Park's 2-year-old summer program, which will feature the $1.4 million Florida Sire Stakes, begins to heat up this week with a dozen 2-year-old fillies entered Friday in a $48,000 maiden special weight event.

The race, to be contested at 4 1/2 furlongs, has drawn a pair of starters from the barn of Wesley Ward in Gentilly, a daughter of Candy Ride, and Ponderous, a daughter of Afleet Express. The race has also drawn entries from trainers Teresa Pompay (Miss Amalita), Joe Calascibetta (Alarming Angel) and Stanley Gold (Standard Deal).

More than 50 juveniles who sold during last week's record Ocala Breeders Sales April auction arrived at Gulfstream over the past four days. Many of them will be preparing for the Florida Sire Stakes, which kicks off Aug. 9 with the $100,000 Desert Vixen and the $100,000 Dr. Fager.
