Edgard Zayas Named Prime Jockey Award Winner
Jockey Edgard Zayas was named the recipient Friday of the Prime Jockey Award by III Forks Prime Steakhouse and Cantina Laredo Modern Mexican.
The Prime Jockey Award is presented twice a month to a jockey who achieves high standards both on and off the track. Each recipient will receive a $100 gift certificate to III Forks Prime Steakhouse or Cantina Laredo Modern Mexican. Both popular restaurants are located at The Village at Gulfstream Park.
Dennis Labrador, proprietor of III Forks Prime Steakhouse, will present the certificate to Zayas following Friday’s seventh race.
Zayas has ridden a total of seven winners this week through Thursday, including three on Thursday. He currently has 18 winners at the meet.
Zayas, an apprentice jockey, is riding fulltime at Gulfstream Park for the first time. He went from attending jockey school in Puerto Rico to winning the first race he rode at Calder in November. The 19-year-old works every morning on the Equicizer with Hall of Fame rider Angel Cordero and receives additional instruction from John Velazquez.
"Having Angel Cordero and John Velazquez helping me is incredible," Zayas said.
"He has a lot of talent and ability," said Cordero of Zayas. "I tell him not only to strive to be a good 'bug' boy, but to be a good rider, so when you lose your 'bug' you can still make a living.
"What I like about Edgard is he takes criticism well and is very humble and willing to learn. He asks questions, which I like. Racing doesn't provide much time to learn as other sports do. If you make a mistake in this game you pay for it. Jockeys have no coaching, so when they make a mistake trainers get upset and often times don't want to ride them anymore. I think you should praise them a little, but also keep them humble. I tell him to listen to everyone and to be open minded when someone offers help. He's a quick learner and he's improved a lot since we first started."
