Fly Down & Square Eddie Drill for Donn Handicap
By Jack Will
Mitaab bin Abdullah’s 4-year-old Fly Down drilled a ‘bullet’ five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 at Palm Meadows and J. Paul Reddam’s 5-year-old worked six furlongs in 1:14 1/5 at Santa Anita Saturday morning as the two get ready to meet in the $500,000 Donn Handicap (G1) next Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
Fly Down will be among the favorites in the 53rd running of the historic 1 1/8 miles fixture in his first start since finishing third behind Blame and Zenyatta in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6 for trainer Nick Zito. The son of Mineshaft won his only start over the Gulfstream track last year, winning a 1 1/8 miles allowance race by a head with First Dude second.
Square Eddie is scheduled to board a Tex Sutton Forwarding charter flight Sunday morning to South Florida as he makes his second start of the season for trainer Doug O’Neill. The son of Smart Strike set a track record of 1:13 for 6 ½ furlongs winning a 6 ½-furlong allowance by 3 ¼ lengths at Santa Anita on Jan. 14 in his first start in more than a year. Jockey Corey Nakatani will fly in for the mount.
