Full Brother to Barbaro Rolls to Victory at Gulfstream
Margano, a full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Florida Derby (G1) champion Barbaro, gained entry into the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle Saturday with an authoritative triumph in the seventh race, a 1 1/16-mile maiden turf event.
The Lael Stables’ homebred colt settled off the early pace before closing strongly through the stretch under jockey Javier Castellano to score by 1 ¼ lengths over pacesetter Silver Max. The 2-year-old son of Dynaformer’s first victory in three starts, completed in 1:44.21, rewarded his trainer’s pre-race confidence in him.
“I did expect it,” trainer Barclay Tagg said. “He was nice and dominant, and I was pleased with that. He rated nicely and did everything nicely. He lost a little ground, which is OK. I’d rather he stay out of trouble if he’s good enough, and he was good enough.”
Margano ($11.80) didn’t impress his trainer nearly as much during his early training.
“He was big and heavy. It took a long time to get him fit. He never did anything wrong, but I can’t say he showed ability right off the back, because he didn’t,” Tagg said. “But we had a lot of hope for him, and he came around nicely.”
