Gulfstream Park and its satellite training facility Palm Meadows will once again play a significant role come the running and odds of the 138th Kentucky Derby (G1) May 5 at Churchill Downs.
In the latest Derby future wagering odds released by Wynn Las Vegas, eight of the top 12 favorites wintered and/or raced at Gulfstream or Palm Meadows.
Right on top of the list at 9-2 is Union Rags, an impressive winner of Gulfstream’s Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2). The Michael Matz-trained colt, who spent the winter at Palm Meadows – the winter home of five of the last six Kentucky Derby winners ¬- remains the top pick in several Derby polls despite a troubled third-place finish March 31 in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1).
Bodemeister, fresh off a victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1), holds the second spot at 5-1 on the Wynn list followed by Wood Memorial (G1) winner Gemologist, another winter resident of Palm Meadows who kicked off his 3-year-old campaign March 16 with a victory at Gulfstream.
Blue Grass (G1) winner Dullahan, who started his 3-year-old season with a second-place finish March 11 in Gulfstream’s Palm Beach (G3), is listed at 10-1 while Wood Memorial runner-up Alpha, another Palm Meadows resident, is the fifth choice at 12-1.
Last year’s champion 2-year-old Hansen, who spent the early winter training at Gulfstream and started his 2012 campaign with a second-place finish Jan. 29 in the Holy Bull (G3), is seventh on the Wynn list. Florida Derby (G1) winner Take Charge Indy is 11th on the list at 18-1 while El Padrino, who wintered at Palm Meadows and also started his 3-year-old campaign at Gulfstream, is eighth on the list at 15-1.
Gulfstream will once again be the place in Florida to watch and wager on the Kentucky Derby. There is will drink specials, dining in Ten Palms, and voucher giveaways for GP Advantage Club members.
