March 24 Fundraiser to Help Students Attend Prom/Homecoming Events
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Gulfstream Park will play host to a dress drive Saturday, March 24 for Becca’s Closet, a national, non-profit organization that donates formal dresses to high school students who are unable to purchase them and who otherwise would not be able to attend their prom and homecoming events.
The event will be held from 1-6 p.m. at the Beach Bar, located at the south entrance to Gulfstream Park.
Becca’s Closet was created as a legacy to Rebecca Kirtman and the project she started in the spring of her freshman year at Nova High School in Davie, FL. Rebecca launched a dress drive to provide prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who could not afford to purchase them. She single-handily collected and donated over 250 formal dresses to help hundreds of girls across South Florida attend their high school proms. An honor student and cheerleader, Rebecca passed away in a tragic automobile accident in 2003.
“We are so pleased that Gulfstream Park has chosen to support Becca’s Closet with this wonderful event,” said Pam Kirtman of Becca’s Closet. “What a great opportunity for people to come out and make a difference while having a great time. And it is so fitting for the ‘Sport of Kings’ to help make it possible for high school girls to feel like queens at their proms.”
Fans and friends will be asked to bring age appropriate dresses in current styles appropriate for prom and homecoming events to the Beach Bar Saturday, March 24 between 1-6 p.m. Donation receipts will be available. Some of the dresses will be modeled by volunteers – escorted by Gulfstream’s jockeys – in the winner’s circle after the second race.
Those donating items will be registered for a ‘Day at the Races’ package ($200 value) as well as other raffle items provided by Gulfstream Park.
