Inside Information & Orchid Next Weekend at Gulfstream

Division leading fillies and mares will be in the spotlight next weekend at Gulfstream Park with renewals of the $150,000 Inside Information Stakes (G2) at seven furlongs highlighting the Saturday program and the $150,000 Orchid Stakes (G3) to be run at 1 ½ miles on turf on Sunday.
Starlight Partners and C.E. Glasscock’s 4-year-old Hilda’s Passion was impressive winning the last Graded stakes for filly and mares on the Gulfstream stakes schedule, drawing off to win the 6 ½-furlong Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3) by 2 ½ lengths on Feb. 13.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Hilda’s Passion is a daughter of Canadian Frontier with four wins from seven career starts and just missed when second by a neck as the favorite in the Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) at six furlongs on Jan. 15, the first round of the three Graded stakes on the Gulfstream schedule for the filly and mare sprint division.
Another intriguing prospect for the Inside Information is Peter Callahan’s 4-year-old Beautician, who is based at Gulfstream with trainer Ken McPeek but shipped to Fair Grounds for her season debut, winning the six-furlong Pan Zareta Stakes on Feb. 19 in her first start since October at Keeneland.
A roan/gray daughter of Dehere, Beautician was a division leader as a 2-year-old when second by a length in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Santa Anita with Blind Luck third. She won only one of nine starts last year with two seconds and two thirds in somewhat of a disappointing campaign.
Trainer Christophe Clement has won the Orchid six times over the years, including four straight from 1999-2002, and has four eligible for Sunday’s 48th edition of the turf marathon, including Moyglare Stud Farm’s 4-year-old Irish-bred Endless Expanse, a three-length winner of an 11-furlong turf allowance over the course on Feb. 27 in her American debut.
Two other Orchid nominees with a good race over the course are Barbara Hunter’s 4-year-old Keertana and Blue Devil Racing Stable’s Zapparition, one-two in the 11-furlong The Very One Stakes (G3) over the course on Feb. 20, separated by a half-length. Trained by Dale Romans, Zapparatition is a 4-year-old filly by Ghostzapper and had won a 1 ½ miles turf allowance over the course on Jan. 20.

Mucho Macho Man Kept on Edge for Louisiana Derby

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and partners’ 3-year-old Mucho Macho Man worked five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 Saturday morning at Gulfstream Park for trainer Kathy Ritvo as he prepares for a trip to Fair Grounds next week and a start as one of the  favorites in the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2)
A son of Macho Uno, Mucho Macho Man began the season finishing fourth in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream on Jan. 30 and  made a previous  foray to Fair Grounds to win the $300,000 Risen Star Stakes (G2) by 1 ½ lengths on Feb. 19 with jockey Rajiv Maragh aboard.
Also working at Gulfstream ahead of a trip to Louisiana next week was Five D Thoroughbreds and Wind River Stable’s 3-year-old filly Kathmanblu with five furlongs in 1:02 2/5 for trainer Ken McPeek ahead of a start in Saturday’s $500,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). The daughter of Bluegrass Cat won the Rachel Alexander Stakes (G3) there on Feb. 19 after her victory on turf in the Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan. 22.
