Gulfstream, Palm Meadows To Host Backstretch Appreciation Days
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows will play host to Backstretch Appreciation Days on March 21-22. Admission, food and raffles will be free to all licensed backstretch workers and their families.
Gulfstream’s Backstretch Appreciation Day, to be held on March 21 at 4 p.m., will mark the 17th annual celebration while Palm Meadows’ Appreciation Day, to be held March 22 at noon, will be its fourth. Along with more than 600 pounds of food being donated by Gulfstream, trainers, owners and jockeys step forward every year with generous donations in an effort to provide backstretch workers with essentials.
“We will give approximately 1,500 meals out during these backstretch appreciation days,” said organizer Donna Ward. “Along with Gulfstream, the trainers, jockeys, veterinarians, jockey’s agents and some owners have been very generous with their donations. This will allow us to raffle off refrigerators, microwaves, portable DVD players and, as we did last year, more than 60 bicycles, which is the mode of transportation for many of our backstretch workers.”
Timothy Ritvo, Gulfstream’s VP of Racing, said; “It’s important to show thanks to our backstretch workers for all their hard work and long hours in looking after all of the extraordinary equine athletes both at Gulfstream and Palm Meadows.”
