Gulfstream's 40-Day Boutique Meet at Calder Race Course to Offer 23 Stakes
Grade 3 My Charmer and Tropical Turf Handicaps Highlight 12 Turf Stakes
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Gulfstream Park announced today it will run 23 stakes races, including 12 turf stakes, worth a total of $1.775 million during the Fall Turf Festival, a 40-day boutique meet presented by Gulfstream Park at Calder Race Course.
The meet, which will run from Wednesday, Oct. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 30, will feature 21 $75,000 stakes races and two, $100,000 graded stakes. The meet will also include three Saturday programs with multiple stakes races. The highlights of the first Fall Turf Festival include:
The $600,000 Sunshine Millions Preview Day Saturday, Nov. 8, with eight $75,000 stakes races for Florida-breds including four juvenile stakes and the Millions Classic Preview at 1 1/16 miles.
The $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap (G3) for 3-year-olds and up and the $100,000 My Charmer (G3) for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, will both be contested at 1 1/8 miles on Saturday, Nov. 22.
Juveniles will take center stage Saturday, Nov. 29 with six, $75,000 2-year-olds stakes ranging from six furlongs to a mile on both the main track and turf course.
"We believe the stakes schedule for the first Fall Turf Festival presented by Gulfstream Park will serve as a bridge between the summer and winter meets and benefit local horsemen as well as those shipping to Gulfstream and Palm Meadows for the winter season and Championship Meet," said Gulfstream's Vice President of Racing P.J. Campo. "Obviously, this will be a new experience for all of us, but we intend to learn from this inaugural meet, get feedback from horsemen and fans, and begin building on what we hope will be a great fall tradition in Thoroughbred racing."
The Fall Turf Festival will begin Wednesday, Oct. 8 and the Saturday, Oct. 11 program will feature the first stakes of the meet, the $75,000 Eight Miles West for 3-year-olds and up at a mile. The following weekend, Saturday, Oct. 18 will feature two turf events, the $75,000 Showing Up for 3-year-olds and $75,000 Cellars Shiraz for 3-year-old fillies. Both will be contested over a mile course.
Sunshine Millions Preview Day Saturday, Nov. 8, restricted to Florida-breds, will feature four stakes for 2-year-olds, two at 6 1/2 furlongs and two at a mile on the turf along with the Millions Turf Preview and Millions Filly & Mare Turf Preview at 1 1/16 miles, the Millions Distaff Preview for fillies and mares at a mile, and the Millions Classic Preview.
The afternoon of Nov. 29 will be a day to showcase 2-year-olds. The six races will include open and filly divisions at six furlongs, one mile and one mile on the turf.
The Fall Turf Festival will run Wednesday through Sunday. There will be two exceptions. There will be racing Monday Oct. 13, Columbus Day, and Tuesday, Nov. 11, Veteran's Day. There will be no live racing during those weeks on Wednesday.
