Niconellie Sets Track Record in Maiden-Breaking Romp
$100,000 Rainbow 6 Jackpot Thursday

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Niconellie stamped himself as a horse to watch in the upcoming Florida Sire Stakes series in Sunday’s seventh race at Gulfstream Park, posting a dazzling 9 ¾-length romp with a track-record clocking of 51.09 seconds for 4 ½ furlongs.

The 2-year-old gelded son of West Acre set a pressured pace before drawing clear through the stretch to eclipse the record of 51.31 set by Dekabrist on May 11. The Gil Campbell homebred was ridden by Luca Panici. Trained by Kathleen O’Connell, Niconellie debuted on June 15 by finishing a close second after a troubled trip.

“The first time out he was a very green. Today, he was more focused and performed very well,” Panici said of the 6-5 favorite. “I think he’ll handle more distance too.”

Niconellie is Florida Sire Stakes eligible and is now a prime candidate for the $100,000 Dr. Fager, the six-furlong first leg of the open division slated for Aug. 9.
