HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – After Smart as a Fawkes debuted with a 4 ¼-length victory in Friday’s fifth race at Gulfstream, one might assume that the 2-year-old colt’s owners had waited for a good one to come along to pay tribute to longtime trainer David Fawkes.
“To be honest, in the beginning we almost didn’t even bring him to the track. He was too slow,” said Edee Rose, who bred and owns the son of Langfuhr with her Maxxam Alliance partners, husband Bruce Rubinowicz and mother Joyce Rose. “He just wasn’t training like he had a lot of ability. I’m glad we were wrong.”
Smart as a Fawkes may have been slow to come around in his training, but the Florida-bred colt was quick to get started in his racing, scoring a commanding victory over seven maiden special weight rivals in the first mile event for juveniles this year at Gulfstream.
“He came in without a lot of expectations. His early works were kind of slow, but as he progressed and the farther he went, the stronger his breezes were,” Fawkes said. “He ran super today.”
Jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. tucked Smart as a Fawkes behind the pacesetters while saving ground into the stretch before swinging wide coming off the turn and powering to victory, doing his namesake proud.
As for the naming of the winning 9-5 favorite…
“We’ve known Dave too long not to name a horse for him,” Rose said.
Who’s Hot: Trainer Gustavo Delgado and jockey Santiago Gonzalez teamed for a pair of victories with Saturday’s for Fun ($5.40) in the first and Flash Paws ($15.40) in the eighth. Jockey Ramsey Zimmerman also doubled with Ludicrous Speed ($9.40) in the seventh and Irish Orchid ($8.80) in the ninth.
