Gulfstream Today 1.24.2013
The Lead: While undefeated champion Shanghai Bobby and promising stablemate Verrazano schooled during the second race Thursday afternoon at Gulfstream Park, another Pletcher-trained colt was winning his race debut.
GoldMark Farm's Cross Traffic, a 4-year-old son of Unbridled's Song ridden by John Velazquez, broke his maiden by 1¾ length while covering the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.79.
“GoldMark sent him to us last summer at Belmont where a lot of his preparatory work was done," Pletcher said. "He had a minor setback which held him up. We needed a little more time and he’s trained really well since he’s come back to us."
Making a quick trip from his Palm Meadows home, Shanghai Bobby, the undefeated winner of the Breeder’s Cup Juvenille, visited on Thursday afternoon to school in the paddock in preparation of his start in the Holy Bull (G3) on Saturday. Jockey Rosie Napravnik will be aboard.
“He hasn’t been to the racetrack or anywhere besides Palm Meadows since he ran in the Breeder’s Cup. We wanted him to get familiar with his surroundings here," Pletcher said. "He came in the paddock very well and saddled great, so we’re looking forward to Saturday. I’m really pleased with the way he’s training.
“I’m OK with our post position. Normally you wouldn’t want to draw the one if it was a one-turn mile. I wouldn’t want to be there. But in the two turn races here I think the inside post is an advantage. He’s been in every scenario before and is an experienced horse, so I don’t think it will bother him at all.
“Our plan is to run in the Holy Bull and the Florida Derby (G1) with a little space in between. If we decide after the Holy Bull that we need a race in between, we’ve got some flexibility with his schedule, which is why we wanted to get started early to create as many options as possible.”
Who’s Hot: Winning 10 races since Sunday, jockey John Velazquez is thriving at Gulfstream Park. Velazquez won two on Thursdays card with Cross Traffic ($3.40) in the
second and Zane ($11.40) in the fourth.
Jockey Elvis Trujillo also won two on the card with Bristol Dancer ($2.80) in the fifth and Big Screen ($18.80) in the eighth.
Jockey Joe Rocco Jr. rode his 1,000th career winner aboard Rustler Hustler in the ninth race. Rocco won two other races with Go Go Lolo ($5.60) in the first and Success Rate ($19.40) in the tenth.
Trainer Jane Cibelli won two on the card with Bristol Dancer ($2.80) in the fifth and Rustler Hustler ($8.60) in the ninth.
Rainbow 6 Carryover: $573,850.58.
