Gulfstream Today 1.4.2013
Lead: Ron Hendrickson’s 4-year-old filly Who Is Camille returned from a seven-month layoff to win Friday’s sixth race allowance feature at Gulfstream Park by 4 ½ lengths over Starship Stable’s Starship Serena. Cudney Stables and John Gunther’s 6-to-5 favorite Klondike Kate was another 2 ¼ lengths back in third in the six-furlong test.
Ridden by Paco Lopez, Who Is Camille was making her first start since a dull sixth-place effort in the Leave Me Alone Stakes at Calder on June 9 for trainer Marcial Navarro.
“We really didn’t know it at the time but she had suffered a head injury in her stall before that last race,” said Navarro. “We turned her out on a farm for several months, but she still wasn’t right when she came back. We had a couple of more vets check her out and they finally figured out that the injury was to the parietal bone (top of head) and did some therapy that worked. She’s a good filly.”
Who Is Camille is a daughter of Dixie Union purchased for a modest $15,000 at the OBS April 2-year-old sales and broke her maiden in her only previous race at Gulfstream last February after five starts at Calder in 2011. She stepped up to win the $50,000 OBS Filly Sprint in Ocala in her next outing in April and then checked in fifth in the French Village Stakes at Calder in May before the Leave Me Alone.
Who Is Camille paid $10.40 for $2 to win and was timed the six furlongs in 1:11:28 over the ‘fast’ track.
Who’s Hot: Jockeys Paco Lopez and Javier Castellano each won two races as did the team of jockey Jozbin Santana and trainer Ron Pellegrini.
