Gulfstream Today 3.1.2013
Lead: Aquino Stable’s 3-year-old Kentucky-bred filly looked very good in her second start this year, drawing off to capture Friday’s $56,900 Primal Force overnight stakes at Gulfstream Park by 5 ¾ lengths over Averill Racing and Silver Stable’s R Free Roll in the 6 ½ furlongs test.
Ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher, Fusaichiswonderful was a modest $12,000 Keeneland September yearling sales purchase and won her first five starts last year in Puerto Rico before coming to Pletcher this winter. The daughter of 2002 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Fusaichi Pegasus made her 2013 debut finishing fourth in the Forward Gal Stakes (G2) here on Jan. 26, a race won by Pletcher-trained Kauai Katie.
Velazquez was aboard Kauai Katie in the Forward Gal while Joel Rosario had the mount on Fusaichiswonderful that day. “The last time she (Fusaichiswonderful) ran she raced down inside and got dirt in her face. Today she was outside in the clear and just cruised up there. She’s a nice filly.”
The big disappointment in the Primal Force was the dull third-place finish by Maggi Moss’ previously undefeated So Many Ways as the 7-to-10 favorite, checking in four lengths behind the runner-up, although she did get away poorly in the field of five 3-year-old fillies. Trained by Anthony Dutrow, So Many Ways was making her first start since winning the Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga in Sept. 2.
Fusaichiswonderful paid $6.60 to win as the second choice and was timed the 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16:28 over the ’fast’ track.
Who’s Hot: Jockey Joel Rosario rode four of the first five winners on the card, two of them owned by meet leading owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trained by Mike Maker.
Rosario was aboard Kissin Gentleman ($2.60) in the first and Bernie the Maestro ($5.20) in the fourth for Maker, South Shore ($7.20) in the third for trainer Christophe Clement and Political Courage ($11.80) in the fifth for trainer Michael Matz.
